Beauty Tips to Beat the Heat

Summer is finally here!! The sun is out and the heat is coming! ☀️Although summer is an amazing time of year, it can bring its challenges - especially when it’s wedding season. To help you conquer the heat, we put together our best advice and favorite products to help you look your best, no matter the temp!

Makeup

It’s time to say goodbye to melting foundation and smeared mascara. But before we go there, let’s start at the beginning. Sunscreen. 👏Many people forget about this first, and very important, step. Some sunscreens can create an oily layer, but using oil-free moisturizers with SPF can help you minimize layering heavy products on the skin. Sunscreen is essential in the summer months! Do you have trouble with your makeup sliding and smudging? Well the answer to your trouble is...primer! “A primer is a really good investment to ensure a beautiful, matte complexion” sayings communications manager for Deralogica, Sonette Donker. Here are some of our favorites:

Everyone loves that healthy, natural bridal radiance. ✨However, it can be hard to obtain that in the heat. Fiona Stiles, a professional makeup artist, says, “Avoid cream foundations or anything too luminous, as the humidity will make you extra shiny and sweaty-looking if you have too much sparkle on your skin.” We recommend using products with a lighter, more feathery texture - tinted moisturizers, lip glosses and stains, and cream blushes. That way you can still have glow that isn’t over-the-top shiny.

TOUCH-UPS

An oily T-zone instantly portrays the message "I'm hot, like really hot”. 😰To eliminate that in seconds, nothing beats blotting papers. They are super cheap, easy, and convenient. By slightly pressing the blotting sheet onto the oily parts of the face, it can instantly take away that unwanted shine. If your makeup needs a perk as well, blot first and then follow up with a pressed powder.

WEDDING TIP: Getting a bridal gown with pockets can give you the advantage of carrying blotting papers, tissues, or anything you need with you throughout the day. 👰

How to Achieve the Perfect Bridal Look

Having the perfect bridal look for your big day takes months of preparation, just like planning your wedding. Below we’re going to walk you through the steps of achieving the perfect bridal look via skin prep and also if you choose to do your bridal makeup on your own!

The first important step is starting with your skin. Your skin is the base of the makeup, so you’ll want to make sure your skin is on point! It is becoming more popular for brides to get a facial or series of facials before their special day. This will ensure your skin is exfoliated, healthy and glowing for a seamless makeup application!  Another option to get fresh, dewy skin is to get a spray tan or visit the tanning bed!

Don’t forget to whiten your teeth, too. You’ll want to make sure you have pearly white teeth. You can schedule an appointment  your dentist or use Crest White Strips {the best white strips they sell in the store and you can see a difference almost immediately}.

We recommend..

Crest White Strips $36.99 | Amazon.com

St. Tropez Self Tanner $32 | The Tanning Store

Now let’s talk about your bridal makeup if you’re hiring a makeup artist. (DIY makeup brides - don't worry - we've got tips for you below!) Take it from us – do not skip your bridal makeup trial! Most makeup artists require a trial, and we agree 100%! Waiting until your wedding day to see your bridal makeup for the first time is a huge no no. With the bridal makeup trail, you can see how your makeup looks in natural lights vs. photography lighting, etc.

The most important makeup tip is for your makeup to stay neutral and natural. You don’t want to try new looks like bright eye shadow or a bold lip that is too dark on your wedding day.  You want to look {and feel} comfortable and enhance your natural beauty. Extreme looks can also take away and distract from your wedding’s other elements which you don’t want to do. Of course every bride has her own style, but we recommend sticking to light and carefree makeup styles.

Because we may or may not be makeup collectors {hoarders} , let’s talk about must have makeup products if you’re doing your own makeup for your wedding day!

First, make sure to have concealer and primer on deck for last minute break outs or dark circles caused from a little wedding planning stress. Having a good foundation is also essential for a long day of festivities. These products will make your skin look smooth, clear and flawless.

ELF Poreless Face Primer $5.49 | Target

Sonia Kashuk $10.49 | Target

Another necessary product is waterproof mascara. Your wedding is a day full of emotions and it is normal to expect some happy tears here and there. Therefore, waterproof mascara will ensure that your makeup will stay on and not streak down your face. If you plan on wearing false lashes to add some volume, remember that the glue might loosen with tears. Make sure you still have a good waterproof mascara on hand for any emergencies.

** Pro Tip** Use the 'Alyssa #2' lashes in layers, starting from the inside and working your way out to achieve a more natural look!

Lashes starting at $5 | Sephora.com

Finally, all brides should complete their makeup look with setting spray. The setting spray will hold all of the makeup in place throughout hugs, tears, dancing and a few glasses of champagne ;).

We recommend...

Urban Decay Makeup Setting Spray $31.00 | Macys.com

87Loreal Makeup Extender $4.87 | Amazon.com

Of course, touch ups will be necessary throughout the day as you will probably be crying, eating, kissing, smiling, dancing, etc. So be sure that you have an emergency kit with blotting papers, loose powder and your lipstick!

10 Ways to Save On Your Wedding!

If you've been following our blog recently, you'll notice that we LOVE helping our brides save money when planning their weddings. It may be a slight obsession of ours. You can't blame us for loving to be budget savvy! Not only can you save on your wedding dress by shopping at any of our 5 locations, but we've put together 10 other ways to save on your wedding below!

1. Digital Invitations

With postage at an all time high, save yourself a few bucks and send digital invitations versus mailing physical invitations. There are plenty of websites like Greenvelope or Paperless Post  that will allow you to design beautiful & modern wedding invitations and send them for a fraction of the cost of snail mail! Not only are you going to save $$, but you'll save yourself some time, a few less paper cuts and the digital invites are also eco-friendly. Sounds like a win to us!

2. Food Trucks

A typical catering buffet menu can run you anywhere from $30-60 per person. With an average guest count of 120, you're going to be spending $3,600++ on feeding your guests at a minimum! Ditch the typical wedding food fare and opt for a modern Food Truck! The beauty of hiring a food truck for your special day is not only saving you $$, but the menu can be customized to fit your wants and the food will be cooked fresh and on site. No hot boxed food here!

3. Faux Florals

Another expensive wedding cost will be your flowers. If you're going for a Pinterest Wedding, your floral bill is going to start at $3,000. Do you know how many round trip flights to Mexico that could get you!? We'd rather spend our money elsewhere (can you tell we have the beach on our minds?). You can create paper flowers on your own or check out companies like The Bride's Bouquet or The Flower Craft Shop via Etsy.

4. Sunday is the new Saturday

Most venues offer a lower rate for hosting your wedding on an 'off peak' day or season! Some of our couples even throw tradition out the door and get married on a weekday. If your family and friends love you, they'll make it to your wedding no matter what! Look into alternative dates or summer pricing with your vendors. It never hurts to ask!

5. Brunch Wedding - Did someone say Bacon?

If you & your hubby are dead-set on a Saturday date, try a Brunch wedding! Not only will the venue rental be less expensive, but you'll also save on food & drink. Breakfast foods like pancakes, fresh fruit, muffins and bacon are much more economical that serving your guests a heavy buffet dinner. You can serve mimosas or bellinis and a signature drink and ditch the costly beer & wine!

6. Fake the Cake

Wedding cake, that is! Some bakers will create a faux cake with styrofoam and fondant icing and will provide you with a sheet cake to serve for your guests. You can also request that the bottom layer be real cake, so that you can take part in the ceremonial cutting of the cake.

7. Ditch the Hard Liquor

Having an open bar can seriously drive up the cost of your wedding! Instead of hosting a full liquor bar, create a signature drink that you and your fiance love! You can even do a his & hers, or his & his, or hers & hers - you get it ;) - drink to show off your favorite cocktails. If you're having troubles selecting a cool cocktail, check out our previous posts with recipes & ingredients here.

8. Ordain A Friend

The typical cost of hiring an officiant can range from $150 - $300 or more. Instead of spending a few hundred bucks to hire a random person who you've only had about an hour of face time with, you can have a friend get ordained as an officiant online for FREE! Check out the American Marriage Ministries for more information.

9. Use Signage

Instead of printing menu cards, escort cards or wedding programs, use a large chalk sign or printed poster to display important information! Most of the cards listed above are typically tossed after the wedding anyways. You can reuse the chalk board sign for dinner parties or even future baby announcements!

10. Honey Fund

One of the most overlooked items of planning weddings is the honeymoon! After months of planning stress and anxiety, you'll NEED a vacation with just you & your hubs to relax and decompress. If you haven't already worked your honeymoon into your budget, don't fret! In leiu of favors, you can create a honeyfund account, or even place this cool sign at your gift table. Guests will definitely pull out their wallet if they see this ;)
